Although Halloween has its roots in a Celtic festival known as Samhain as well as the Christian holiday of All Saint’s Day, Halloween is now largely a secular activity. One of the main characteristics of this October 31 festival is attendance in costume parties, of which probably the most popular outfit is the kids’ Native American costume. Well, no surprise there as we do have a strong Native American heritage that we are proud of.

Basic Costume
The basic Native American costume will vary depending on the gender of the wearer as well as the Native American tribe being portrayed. However, there is one common aspect in all these costumes – comfort is paramount with the weather as the main consideration. Thus, you will see Native American costumes made from natural materials like cotton and other combinations as well as styles that allow for freedom of movement. You are assured that your child can run, walk and play in the costume without fear of tripping over layers of clothing.
For girls, the costume takes its inspiration from Pocahontas. The colors usually range from light to medium brown with colored accents like blue on the waist and hem, the latter of which is either asymmetrical or fringed. Of course, you can also find other colors like pink and yellow.
For the boys, trousers with fringed hems coupled with tops in the same style are popular. The colors are usually limited to brown tones in accordance with warrior traditions. Add in moccasins for both boys and girls and your kids are ready to go trick-a-treating.
Well, of course, since Native Americans also lived in cold areas like Alaska and dressed appropriately, you will also find Native American costumes for children with hooded anoraks as the main feature. These jackets are often fringed in fake fur and then paired with warm pants and boots.
Added Accessories
But you should not settle for the basic costume either. We suggest adding Native American accessories to add authenticity to the outfit. For example, get a headdress made from feathers and then worn as a headband. Or maybe Native American beads in various colors to signify your child’s status in society as well as other jewelry made from imitation silver and turquoise. If you have a boy, add a toy bow and arrow for an adventure vibe.
Now, if you still have time, maybe you can draw lines into your little warrior’s face, just like what you see in the movies. Take blue and red face paint and apply to your child’s face like the cheeks and the nose. It will make for a warrior look that your kids will appreciate.
Truly, you and your child can have fun with a kids’ Native American costume. All you need is the right costume coupled with the right accessories as well as face decoration. Your child will then be a proud Native American if only for the Halloween.
